"Given the end of financial year I thought I would comment on the trends in the last 6 months in terms of what we have been seeing in our market.
Business confidence has seen a strong increase in June (the main issues have been input and employment costs). Consumer confidence has improved slightly presumably reflecting the hope that interest rates won’t further rise (interest rates rose just over 1% during the period).
While new listing numbers are well down on previous periods, the stock market has continued its positive rise.
From an activity point-of-view, surprisingly the level of activity has remained consistent, although we are seeing more distressed companies (receivables / ATO tax debt issues) as well as our share of growth companies and those looking to undertake transactions. We are running a number of sell and buy side assignments at the moment.
The forecasters are pointing to “another soft quarter in Q2”, and one would describe the market as a “mixed bag” but with the overall trends heading in the right direction.
